It’s raining in LA still. Naturally, this makes me miss PDX—although the people more than the place. Still, I hope to do my book of Franklin (after I finish the book of Dandy). Can a book be both about someone and dedicated to them? Someone once told me that my pictures seemed like love poems or odes; “as if he falls in love with his subjects,” the person said. Maybe. The entirely charming and handsome Andrew Lake, of @andrewlakephotography. These are nearly a year old now, a slight #throwback to a Salt Lake City session last winter for my book project. Figure it’s been awhile since I updated people on the book project, and some have been asking! We now have a working title, “visions of my homeland.” It recalls for me the work of queer writers, Jamie O’Neill and Mark Merlis, who both authored novels of immense importance to me. In their own way, each interrogate the fundamental separation experienced by the queer identity, and place its pride and questioning into the context of nationalism. They beg the question, “What possible nation can hold our lives and bodies? What would that nation look like?” In the end, strange love and unique pain, I think, are the answer. And two boys—their own island homeland, separate and right. So that’s what I’m working to try and capture: the feeling you get when you look at someone, and are called home.
